Abstract

Cultural heritage, valued in the global context, is an indispensable local resource that needs to be inherited to the future generations of local community. Since there is not any common platform in Akita for combining "designated" cultural properties by governments and local revitalization activities and promotional works for inbound tourism, the essential value and authenticity of cultural heritage are not fully interpreted to the public. In order to build the theoretical framework of heritage tourism by regarding cultural heritage as a tourism resource for sustainable development of local community, this paper is a case study of Akita Fort Ruins discussing the potentials of heritage tourism. Based on the fundamental researches of conservation works and visitors' trend of Akita Fort Ruins, we would like to clarify the current problems and recommend utilizing a new museum which will be opened in 2016 as a core of cultural tourism.
