Ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in the lower troposphere were measured simultaneously for a continuous period of 20 hours using a differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system. O3 concentrations of 70-170 ppb and NO2 concentrations of 20-80 ppb were obtained at 750-1050 m in altitude. The measurement errors due to differential attenuation and gradients in the differential backscatter coefficient were calculated using the attenuation and backscatter coefficients obtained from the return signals. The measurement error due to gradients in the differential backscatter coefficient was about one order of magnitude greater than that due to differential attenutaion. The calculated measurement error due to gradients in the differential backscatter coefficient was 3.3 ppb for O3 and 4.8 ppb for NO2. The observed fluctuations in the O3 and NO2 concentrations were 6.5 ppb and 7.3 ppb, respectively. Correlation was seen between the calculated measurement error and fluctuations in the case of NO2 measurement, but not in the case of O3 measurement.
