This paper aims to explain how hedges in Japanese are translated into Chinese in subtitling. Hedgesusually are used in dialogues as a strategy to avoid potential threats to cooperative interaction andto keep harmonious communication. This study collected 163 sentences with typical hedges fromJapanese drama scripts and compared differences between original lines and their correspondingChinese subtitles from the viewpoint of politeness. Result shows, only 104 sentences (63.80%) withhedges are translated as they are, and 36.20% of collected data are translated without hedges. Thissuggests that target text politeness phenomena are different from those in source texts.
