Abstract

We have reported the stracture and function of University of Nagoya type I membrane lung. Gas exchange was not sufficient in this type of membrane lung. A point of mechanical miss is clearified by repeated examination. Improvement of this piont, however, has not yet acheived by financial difficulty. This time, we pointed out stractural defects of membrane support mat of Lande-Edwards membrane lung and some modifications were made. This new type of membrane lung was named University of Nagoya type II membrane lung, the function of which was compared with that of Lande-Edwards membrane lung. In order to do this comparison, one unit of each membrane lung was used. One unit consists of two sheets of membrane support mats and two sheets of membrane between them. Oxygen tension, carbon dioxide tension, oxygen content, oxygen saturation, hemoglobin content, and oxygen uptake were measured in the blood samples taken at proximal and distal side of one unit of membrane lung. Function of University of Nagoya type II membrane Lung is almost as same as that of Lande-Edwards'.
