The authors studied the complications of resection of the lung in pulmonary tuberculosis at Aichi National Sanatorium.
The results were as follows:
1) For 298 patients, we had 397 operations of lung resection with 5 postoperative deaths from tube rculosis during the period from January 1955 to December 1957.
2) There were 96 postoperative complications, and 25 complications were tuberculosis.
3) Non tuberculous complications were 5 cases of acute dilatation of stomach, 37 cases of hepatitis due to blood transfusion, 5 cases of hemothoraxies and 24 cases of failure of reexpansion of the lung.
4) Tuberculous complications were 18 cases of tuberculous spreads and 7 cases of bronchopleural fistula.
In order to keep complications minimum, we emphasize the necessity of improving operative method and technic.
And we think that earlier discovery and treatment of complications are important.
