The mortality due to vascular disease of brain has been increasing with increasing of longevity of population. The effect of B2-But (Riboflavin-2', 3', 4', 5', -tetrabutyrate) on arteriosclerosis which is one of the responsible agents of such illness was studied. Br-But was administrated to patients who had high serum total cholesterol and β-lipoprotein contents and the following results were obtained.
1. B2-But was effective on lowering the serum total cholesterol and β-lipoprotein contents and the effect was observed in 7.0% of cases. Increased dosage and prolonged period of drug administration strengthened its effect.
2. Undesirable side effect of Br-But on liver function were checked by S-GOT and S-GPT evaluations. No side effect was observed throughout this investigation. It is considered that B2-But is safe for patients prone to arteriosclerosis.
