Abstract
At present, combined radiation and surgical treatment for carcinoma of the esophagus is widely adopted in Japan. Here we report the result of the treatment, iradiated and operated at The National Cancer Center Hospital.
Until June 1971, 252 cases with esophageal carcinoma were operated at our hospital. Of these, 226 cases were irradiated before operation. Methods of irradiation using 60Co or Linear Accelerator were as follows: 5 times daily 200 R per week, 3 times daily 300 R per week, daily 400 or 450 R twice a week. Total irradiated dosis were 3, 000-6, 000 R in each groups.
First, we studied the resected specimen, and radiation effect was evaluated histologically according to the criteria proposed by Dr. Oboshi and Shimosato. Next, long surviving rate was calculated each groups.
Considering the results, 3 times daily 300 R per week method were superior to other methods. In this group there were many patients surviving long period, and surviving rate were higher than the other groups. And, if we expect these patients survive long, total radiation dosis should be over 4, 000 R.
