Abstract

This paper summarizes results of an usability study on several WWW contents. Users were asked to find the answers of questions from the WWW pages, which were displayed as screen images. During the task, their eye movement patters were captured by the eye mark recorder. For the sake of analysis, each WWW page image was divided into several different areas based on their contents, and the eye traces on the each area were analyzed. The results showed that they generally glanced at the overall screens without any particular attention to certain areas. Sometimes, however, they took long time to look at the specific area and it differed according to the contents. These results suggest that users' information selection processes are influenced by the Web page design and it is possible to evaluate the quality of WWW page design by measuring users' eye movement patterns.
