Abstract
Advances in health care technology increase the potential for health care delivery, but at the same time, raise complex questions as to how that technology can best be utilized. The use of organ transplantation also includes many problems such as cost-effectiveness, ascertaining proper transplant recipient criteria, strategies for increasing the donor pool and quality-of-life issues. This paper focuses on economic issues and how they impact upon recipient selection for transplantation in the U.S. Moreover, this paper puts forth some suggestions for Japan's yet-to-be-created transplantation system.
