Abstract
This paper shows the relationship between mental workload (MWL) and a specific type of saccadic eye movements, called 'saccadic intrusions.' When MWL was high, saccadic intrusions were observed significantly more. Previously, pupil diameter was considered as the most accurate index of MWL out of the physiological indices. However, our study has indicated that saccadic intrusions seem to be a better index to reflect MWL than pupil diameter does. The results show the possibility of a real-time MWL estimation system that can detect a moment of driver's cognitive overload.
