The author has developed a new method of measuring the collecting efficiency of a mechanical filter for submicron aerosol particles.
The principle of the method lies in observing the method is based on mobility spectra of ions artificially brought to charge equilibrium by means of the uncharged aerosols.
From these measurements, it has been found that even a high efficiency filter made of non-woven cloth has an average collecting efficiency of only 50% for submicron aerosol particles with radii of the order of 10-6cm. It was also revealed that the efficiency such filters was lowest when collecting particles of 4-5×10-6cm radius.
