The purpose of this study is to measure social support networks of Japanese high school students. For this purpose, a new measure was designed and developed.
First, eight persons who are thought to be important support network members for adolescents were identified(for example, father, mother, close friend, etc.). And then, these eight members were rated to twelve social support items. 147 students(male=88, female=59) completed this questionnaire and a factor analysis was conducted. Two factors were obtained and they were named pshychological support and instrumental support. And factor scores of eight members were calculated and the features of them were clarified.
Also, the correlations between each factor scores and the pshychological distress(depression) score were analyzed. The main result were that family support was negatively corralated with depression, but friends support was not correlated with depreession. Finally, the implication of social support functions and effects for future research was discussed.
