One of the major sources of particulate matter (PM) in the Southeast Asian region is the open burning of rice straw and other agricultural residues. In these regions, plastic products are often burned together during open burning. In this study, we investigated the effect of mixed combustion of rice straw and plastics (polyethylene, polystyrene and PET) on the chemical composition of PM using a lab-scale combustion furnace. When waste plastic was mixed with rice straw combustion, there was a tendency for PM formation, OC components and highly carcinogenic five-ring PAHs to increase. This is because lower temperature, increase smoldering combustion, and accelerating the condensation of gaseous organic components to form PM. In addition, an increase in specific ionic components such as NO3 were observed in the mixed plastic combustion, which may be due to the combustion of plastic additives. Single particle measurement by TEM-EDS showed particles with a high C/O ratio in the mixed combustion of plastics and with the characteristic of small grains coming together to form a particle. These results of this study will provide useful data for future air pollution control measures in Southeast Asia and other regions where open burning is common.
