Social Correspondences to Urge Residents to Evacuate at Tsunami Arrival

-According to the actual situation of residents' response at Chile Earthquake Tsunami in 2010-

Abstract

In Japan, Tsunami warning was issued on February 28, 2010 because the huge earthquake occurred at the offing Chile. However, only few residents have evacuated though Tsunami warning was issued to all area of the Pacific coast. In this paper, we discussed the countermeasure to urge many residents to evacuate according to grasp the actual situation about residents' response at the time of Tsunami warning publication by the questionnaire survey.

By the results of questionnaire survey, we grasped issues about residents' response at that time as below; A few residents have not be able to confirmed whether the evacuation order issued by municipality was intended for their houses or not. Most of evacuees went back to their house after the tsunami arrival time expected by The Meteorological Agency because tsunamis did not come at that time or first tsunami was smaller than the height expected by The Meteorological Agency.

As the conclusion, we suggested countermeasures about tsunami evacuation as below; It is necessary to urge residents to feel bliss when tsunami does not come although Tsunami warning issues. When tsunami warning issues, it is necessary to make the emergency atmosphere by various correspondences of not only government but also mass media and so on.
