This study investigates how a company may maintain a high Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standard through the fourth industrial revolution. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of firms' R&D capabilities on OSH, which is based on knowledge management strategies. The analysis involves data from 100 U.S. companies in the manufacturing sector. The data describes incident rates, R&D activities, as well as investment in new technologies. This study demonstrates that although high R&D capabilities always promote OSH, low R&D capabilities with high investment in new technologies greatly impairs OSH. This study provides theoretical contribution to absorptive capacity theory and safety research as well as practical contribution to safety strategy for companies.
