Abstract
Crystalline slab optical waveguides of a calcium aluminosilicate (Ca2Al2SiO7) were prepared by surface crystallization of a glass with close composition, upon heat treatment after an ultrasonic surface treatment (UST). Singlemode and multimode waveguides were obtained, by controlling the depth of the waveguides with both varying heat treatment temperature and time. The refractive index and optical propagation loss of the slab waveguides was also characterized.
