Abstract
Many retaining walls, small earth dams and embankments were damaged by typhoon no. 23 and Niigata-ken chuetu earthquake in 2004. According to the disaster investigations, soil bags were used as a temporary structure such as retaining walls and erosion protection works to provide preventive and remedial measures. Aiming to find the alternatives use of soil bags from temporary protection works to permanent structures, we are undertaking a research study to find out the application of stacked soil bags for the repair and maintenance of earth structures. In view of the above, a comprehensive series of uni-axial compression tests were conducted. The effects of various influencing factors such as infilling material, soil bag form and geosynthetics soil bags material were also investigated. It was found that property of infill material as well as the stiffness of the soil bag material has a strong influence on the strength and stiffness characteristics of soil bag system.
