Motions of a gasbag surface (max. 60m3) in the recovery and purification system of helium gas were recorded on a chart recorder. The transducer was composed of a ladder-chain, sprocket-wheels and a potentiometer. A small but systematic nonlinear dependence of a gasbag height on the gas volume was linearized by a parallel resistor. The final performances were accuracy of 0.5m3 limited by the shape of the gasbag, resolution of 0.02m3 limited by the potentiometer and hysteresis of 0.03m3 limited by a clearance between the ladder-chain and the sprocket-wheel. These performances match use of a pen-recorder.
The chart contains a large amount of valuable information:
1. Evaporation rate of liquid helium containers.
2. Start and stop times and amount of recovery from substations.
3. Start and stop times and the loss of liquid-helium transfer.
4. Start and stop times of recovery and purification compressors.
5. Performances of recovery and purification compressors, and recovery blowers at substations.
