Abstract
The Rhone glacier is one of the rapidly retreating glaciers in the Alps. Its history has been surveyed by many glaciologists since the 17th century. The glacier front was located near the site where Hotel Glacier du Rhone (1,757 m a.s.l.) stands today. However it retreated rapidly and disappeared from sight over the top of the steep cliff (ca. 2,200 m a.s.l.) in 2001.
