Eighty-four cases of the para-nasal sinusitis were studied statistically, and the mucous membranes of 28 cases were examined under an electron microscope. The age group with the highest incidence was 15-24 years, although more than half of the patients were older than 40 years of age. The nasal plyposis and empyema in the antrum were noteworthy findings in approximately half of the patients.
Ultrastructural changes of the mucosa were not marked in the cases with a good antral ventilation, whereas a remarkable decrease of the ciliated cells was observed in the mucous membranes from the poorly ventilated antrums.
