Questionnaires were sent to 188 pediatricians with the purpose of obtaining the opinions of pediatricians on tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, and 86 responses were obtained. On the questionnaire, particular emphasis was place on the problems on congestive heart failure due to upper airway obstruction and on the evaluation of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.
Six pediatricians reported experiencing patients with congestive heart failure caused by hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids. Fifty-three had patients suffering from dyspnea and stridor at night, and 37 of the doctors attributed these symptoms to upper airway obstruction. Twenty-six pediatricians considered tonsillectomy as an effective therapy especially for patients with nephritis. Approximately half of the pediatricians expressed a cautious attitude toward tonsillectomy, and wished to discuss the advantages and disadvantages with ENT specialists.
