Articulatory functions following treatments for carcinoma of the tongue were studied in 4 patients (including 1 case of reconstruction) by use of dynamic palatography, sound spectrography, X-ray videoscopy, and speech intelligibility tests. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Palatolingual contact area tended to decrease and an abnormal contact pattern was observed as the volume of the resected region increased. 2. In the case of laser partial glossectomy, almost normal contact patterns were observed during both vowel and consonant articulation and the speech intelligibility was high. 3. In the cases of hemiglossectomy and subtotal glossectomy, abnormal contact patterns were observed during the articulation of vowels /i/ and /e/ which require the elevation of the dorsal part of the tongue. 4. In the case of hemiglossectomy, the remaining tongue tended to incline toward the operated side, which was considered to be a compensatory movement. 5. In the cases of subtotal glossectomy and reconstruction, where the mobility of the tongue was severely disturbed, censiderable compensatory movements of the lips and jaw were observed.
