The cases of suppurative otitis media caused by gram negative rod-shaped bacteria studied were groups of 10 and 20 patients respectively given “Polymyxin B” with or without “Cortril” by instillation. The results are as follows.
1. Bacteriocidal action was note when gram negative rod-shaped bacteria were exposed to one per cent “Polymyxin B” for 15 minutes.
2. Bacteriocidal action was shown when Bacillus pyocyaneus were exposed to one percent “Polyxin B” for an hour.
3. Of the 20 patients who received “Polymyxin B” singly, the satisfactory results have been obtained with the definit, and the moderate effectiveness of the treatment in twelve, and three respectively, while no benefit was noted in the remaining five.
4, Of the 10 patients treated with the combined application of “Polymyxin B” and “Cortril”, the successful results have displayed the evidences of the definit, and the moderate effectiveness of the treatment in seven, and one respectively, except the remaining two. Among those patients in this group showing the evidences of effectiveness who have once failed to gain any benefit from the treatment with “Polymyxin B” alone have earned the excellent results with the definit, and the moderate effectiveness in three, and one respectively except one. It, thus affords more efficacy in instillation when “Polymyxin B” is added with adrenocortical hormone than when applied alone.
