Abstract
Twenty-one patients (23 ears) with malignant tumors of the auditory organs were treated in our clinic from 1957 to 1984.
The primary site in 5 cases was the auricle, in 12 cases (14 ears) the external auditory canal and in 4 cases the middle ear. Two patients had malignant tumors in both external auditory canals. The pathological diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma in 18 of the 23 ears.
The patients were treated with operation, radiation and chemotherapy. Although good results were obtained when the primary site was the auricle or external auditory canal, all patients with middle ear lesions died in a short period. Intra-arterial infusion was recently introduced into the therapy of malignant tumors of the external auditory canal, and the resulted are relatively good.
