Elements of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) were introduced in order to describe that what kinds of information on coal are able to be obtained from the ESR spectra. An application of ESR to the heat treated polyacrylnitrile was presented as a model of the ESR study on coal. A brief survey on ESR studies of coal by the various researchers was performed and potential applications of ESR to coal study were mentioned.
