The effects of cold working on aging phenomena at low temperature in an Al-4%Cu-0.065%Sn alloy

Abstract
The influence of cold working at -196 to 0°C on the aging behaviors of the Al-4% Cu-0.065%Sn alloy was studied at aging temperatures of 0 to 100°C comparing with that of the Al-4%Cu alloy. The alloys were solution-treated at 520°C, quenched, elongated up to 15% and subsequently aged. If both the alloys are wrought at -30 to 0°C or aged at 50 to 100°C, the effects of cold working are difficult to discuss precisely. The reasons are: i) the alloys are aged during working, ii) the reversion of G. P. zones and annealing out of lattice defects considerably occur at the initial stage of aging, and iii) lattice defects, in particular, vacancies are also considerably annealed out. When the alloys are wrought at -196°C and aged at 0°C, the initial rate of aging is enhanced in the ternary alloy, but is retarded in the binary alloy with increase in working ratio. The G. P. zones become finer and denser in both alloys as the working ratio is increased.
