MET-SB, the latest model of Mitsubishi's MET series of turbochargers, employs the compressor with a backward-curved blade impeller as distinct from the straight radial blade impeller adopted for the preceding MET-S and MET-SA turbocharger compressors. Consequently, with the new compressor of MET-SB machine, the maximum efficiency has been raised by 1% to 86% and the efficiency at operating point by 3% to 84% as compared with MET-SA model, with the pressure ratio at 2.5 to 3.5. Despite the increased maximum efficiency, the new compressor is less prone to surging. Noise problem experienced with MET-SB machines manufactured at an early stage, in the low air flow range, was successfully remedied by slightly modifying the inducer design.
