Abstract

When berthing or un-berthing a large ship, a pilot is expected to improve the safety by reducing his stress by using both numerical information obtained at the bridge and the visual information at the wing. In our previous study, the usefulness of the support system by using the image processing technology was presented. However, that system did not consider the trim effect, and the bird's-eye view image was partial.

In this paper, we developed the new system which can display a half side bird's-eye view image and provide an integrated numerical information achieved by the 3 cameras. There is a good advantage that it can provide bird's-eye view image without blind spots based on image processing technology. The influence of trim and draught can be considered as well. Since this system can provide visual information which would contribute to the safety around the ship like the state of the tug boats and the numerical information such as the distance to the berth and the approach speed, we expect this system would be useful to support berthing or un-berthing maneuver of a large cargo ship.
