Abstract
This paper reports experiments on the holding power of the anchor and anchor cables of the SEIKAN ferry boats, for the purpose of security of mooring in a port, because the holding power seems to be less than the expected power in the anchorage of HAKODATE port. The experiments consisted of observations of the bottom materials, examination of the state of the anchor and anchor cables which are lying on the sea bottom, and measurements of the holding power of them. As these observations and measurements are affected by the conditions under which the anchor is dropped, they had to be down under the various ways of dropping anchor. The experiments were performed 3 times in succession. For each experiment the anchor was improved in form as a result of the analysis of the former experiment one after another. The forms of the anchor are shown in Figs.2, 3 and 4. As to the holding power, the coefficients of holding power of the anchors are shown in Table 4.
