Studies on the Polarographic Analysis of Metals (2nd Report) Rapid Determination of Copper in Pig-iron, Carbon Steel and Special Steels

Abstract

The author has investigated in detal the necessary conditions for a rapid polarographic determination of copper in iron and steel, and obtained a new simplified method requiring only 20 min, the outline of which is as follows: dissolve 1 g of sample in 10∼15 cc of HNO₃(1:1), pour it slowly and stir to make 60 cc of the supporting electrolyte solution (4 N-NH₄ OH, 1 N-NH₄Cl), filter, take 5 cc of the filtrate, add 2 drops of 1 percent solution of gelatine as maximum suppressor and 10 drops of saturated solution of Na₂SO₃ as oxygen eliminator and copper is determined polarographically. The correction for the temperature is made by the use of a correction equation. This a new simplified apparatus for more rapid analysis is devised. By this method copper can be determined in about 10 minutes.
