The objective of this study was to elucidate the details about the relation between seismic fire that occurred at Ansei Edo earthquake and the fire prevention system established in Edo city during Kyoho era. The area around Edo Castle and the Government’s storehouse for rice were successfully protected from the seismic fire. However, a number of fireproof buildings were damaged and some of them were burned down in a spreading fire. Most of fire organization parties except for a few parties failed to extinguish a fire. As a result, the fire was extinguished only due to large Samurai residences,rivers, canals, androads and so forth.
