Abstract
Modern tourism was expanded throughout the world due to improvements made in railroad technology. Imperialism and colonialism both benefited from this technology, which promoted modernization and tourism development in non-Western areas. The aim of this paper is to clarify the development of modern tourism in colonial Taiwan. The first part of this article focuses on the development of tourism in colonial Taiwan. The second part of this article will examine the development of tourism in the second half of the colonial period through an analysis of the "Taiwan Railroad Tourist Guide."
