This study sought to develop, implement, and study the effectiveness of a consumer education curriculum in the form of a Local Cheap Eats project. The project was held as part of the practical cooking portion of a junior high home economics class. The study showed that students switched from considering only themselves to considering families and the community in their decisions, and successfully engendered awareness of social responsibility in consumption. The issue remains to develop innovative classroom techniques that raise students’ awareness to include social systems. They must also be able to form, through critical thinking, awareness of the importance of social participation.
