This study examined the curricular position of “Sustainable Production and Consumption” in general education in Swiss vocational schools through textbooks, teacher guides, and observations of classroom practice. This study aimed to provide suggestions for further development of consumer education in Japan. The results showed that general education was based on the 2003 framework curriculum for general education lessons provided by the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology and was offered in all vocational schools in Switzerland. In the surveyed vocational schools, “Sustainable Production and Consumption” was taught as part of the “Globalization and Sustainability” unit in the “Law, Politics, and Economics” course. Students independently obtained ideas for solutions, fostering self-perceived confidence in their ability to solve issues, thereby promoting their understanding of social issues as personal ones. These findings indicate that consumer education practices aimed at cultivating critical thinking and a sense of involvement in social issues can be implemented in general education in vocational schools.
