The promoting and inhibitory effects of phosvitin on nucleation and growth of calcium phosphates were investigated using atomic force microscopy and multi-angle light scatterings. It was revealed that nucleation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) on collagen substrate was greatly enhanced when the phosvitin was bound on collagen. On the other hand, transformation kinetics from amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to HAP under the presence of phosvitin was changed from direct reconstruction to heterogeneous growth.
