In this study, unit involving self-regulated learning was developed through an English lesson (Communication English III) in a third year class in a Japanese high school. The method of “Text Detectives,” which is a material in self-regulated learning, was applied to a unit called “The 10,000-Hour Rule” in the textbook. As a result of the lesson with “Text Detectives,” there was a significant increase in motivation, such as self-efficacy and intrinsic value, towards English learning. Also, as a result of introducing a new text in a test, spontaneous use of the methods of self-regulated learning was seen in the students’ answers.
