Abstract
The way for topical therapy in patients with allergic rhinitis differs for nasal irrigation, nasal drop, nasal spray, and nebulizer. Nasal irrigation will defense mucous membrane from the effect of antigen. Historically, topical medication was started with nasal drop. However, former steroid had a side effect of increasing cortisol level in blood. Chlorofluorocarbon propelled sprays were phased out because of the ozone layer to destruction. Aqueous formulation of nasal sprays is the most widely available on the market. The administration of new intra nasal corticosteroid spray is only 1 spray on each nostril a day. However, the patients sometime complain the stimulation of nasal mucosa or the leak from nostril. Newly invented hydrofluoroalkane-propelled aerosol nasal spray is becoming popular in Europe and North America. Since the deposition of nasal airway will be broad and equal, the drug delivery at mucous membrane will be effective. The combined of antihistamine and corticosteroid spray was introduced in Europe. The topical therapy will be more effective in the future.
