The following articles are the summaries of the papers presented at the special public symposium "How does psychology contribute to the upcoming lay judge (Saiban-in) system?" held at the 8th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Law and Psychology. In this symposium, by analyzing the video-recorded deliberations in a mock Saiban-in trial on a charge of robbery resulting in bodily injury (commonly known as "Oikawa case"), we examined the factors that might cause communicative failures (e.g. naive negotiation) in deliberation, and proposed the principles of "communication design" for preventing communicative breakdown in deliberation. Some legal and practical issues concerning the implementation of the design (Saiban-in system) were also discussed. The presentations were based on an interdisciplinary research project conducted by researchers in the field of applied linguistics, psychology, study of law, legal practice, and information engineering.
