This paper aims to clarify how gender studies have developed theory and research in Japanese family sociology since second wave feminism in the 1970s.
The goal of the theoretical contribution of gender studies is to overcome two modern family models, functionalist role defferentiation model and socialist egaritarian model, which have had great influence on Japanese family sociology.
Major research themes developed in gender studies are gender roles, housework, dual career, motherhood/fatherhood, rethinking of “the family”, and rethinking of maritalinstitutions. Quantitative methods have been predominantly used in these research. It is necessary to expand research themes and to develop qualitative methods in order to understand gender reality today.
