Case reports of giant cell epulis are rare in Japan. A case of this lesion is reported with clinical studies of epulis in our department.
A 74 year old woman was admitted to our department because of a lesion in the right maxilla. The tumor was resected with alveolar bone under a clinical diagnosis of epulis.
Microscopic findings: The surface of the tumor wa. covered with mucoustnembrane and connective tissue which separated the epithelium from the giant cell lesion. The central area of the tumor was occupied by short spindle cells and giant cells were seen regularly.
From 1972 to 1981, 61 cases of epulis were examined histolgoically in our department. Granulomatous epulis appeard most frequently (39%) and there was 1 case (1.6%) of giant cell epulis.
