Metastatic carcinoma may involve the maxilla and the mandible. However, metastatic carcinoma of the jaw is quite rare. Three cases of thyroid carcinoma with metastatic osteolytic lesions in the jaws are presented.
Histologically, the metastatic lesions were the same as the primary tumors: an undifferentiated carcinoma and follicular carcinomas.
The undifferentiated carcinoma grew rapidly and tended to metastasize to the lung and other organs. The patient died of respiratory arrest 7 months later.
The prognosis of the follicular carcinoma was comparatively good due to its slow development. One of the follicular carcinomas has been controlled for 7.5 years with several operations for bone metastasis. The other case of follicular carcinoma died with multiple metastasis 7 years after the onset of metastasis.
