Since April 2018, the use of laser equipment has been covered by insurance as an additional charge for oral surgery procedures. We report good results obtained by applying an Er:YAG laser in the excision of mucous cysts.
The patient was a 16-year-old female, who presented with swelling of the left lower lip. There was a soft, wave-like, unilocular mass about 7mm in diameter, with the surface covered by a milky white mucosa. The medical history included multiple bites to the lower lip. Mucous cyst extirpation was performed using an Er:YAG laser, with the irradiation conditions of a repetition pulse rate of 25pps, an irradiation output of 50mJ, and under water injection. After extirpating the mucous cyst, the healing process was observed. The mucous cyst has not recurred during two years of follow-up.
The use of an Er:YAG laser is considered to be effective for mucous cyst extirpation.
