The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color reproducibility of heat-press ceramics by using a staining technique. Ceramic specimens with different color and thickness of staining porcelain were fabricated of Empress T 2, Empress O1, and Empress O2. Three target colors (A 1, A 2, and A 3) were used in the study. The color of ceramic specimens was measured with a small area colorimeter and evaluated by the CIE L*a*b* color system. Color differences between target colors and ceramic specimens were calculated.
Color and thickness of staining porcelain influenced the yellowness, and translucency of ceramic ingots influenced the lightness of ceramic specimens. The results suggested that the translucency of ceramic ingots as well as the color and thickness of staining porcelain are important factors to reproduce the target color by using a staining technique.
