Abstract
This paper deals with a case of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) complicated by small intestine carcinoid tumor and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small intestine.
A 77-year-old woman who had a previous history of undergoing surgery for breast cancer was seen at the hospital because of vomiting and abdominal pain. Following abdominal CT scanning, intestinal obstruction was diagnosed. We performed surgery because the patient was suspected to have a small bowel tumor which caused the intestinal obstruction. During surgery, an about 2-cm diameter tumor was found at the small intestine about 160 cm apart from the Treitz ligament, at where the serosa was twisted. In addition to the tumor, an about 3-mm diameter tumor which was located in the small intestine 140 cm apart from the Treitz ligament was identified. Histopathology revealed the former tumor to be carcinoid and the latter to be GIST.
We sometimes encounter case reports of NF1 complicated by carcinoid tumor, however, most cases of them are of duodenal carcinoid tumor and small intestine carcinoids like in this case are rare. In the present case, the patient had NF1 complicated by triple malignant neoplasms, namely breast cancer, GIST of the small intestine, and small intestine carcinoid, and from this point of view, this case appears to be a valuable case. This case is thus reported here, together with some bibliographic comments.
