Pourpose: The locations of JOKAN, GB-2 and TH-23 according to JUSHIKEI HAKKI of modern meridianology differ from the locations described in the ancient classic KOOTSUKYO. The purpose of this study is to through literary study and organization determine in which era the change took place and which explanation is the most correct.
Method:
1. The JUSHIKEI HAKKI quotation “The three branches and 20 points of the head” was examined.
2. The quotations concerning point locations found in the various writings between the ancient KOOTSUKYO and the JUSHIKEI HAKKI were collected and arranged chronologically and examined.
3. The fundamentals of meridian paths are found in KEIMYAKU Chapter of the Reisu. All three of the points are located on the Gall Bladder Meridian, thus examination of the Gall Bladder Meridian as described in the KEIMYAKU Chapter was done.
Body:
1. The “3 branches and 20 points of the head”.
In the JUSHIKEI HAKKI, the Gall Bladder Meridian flows in 20 points on the head and branches 3 times. The addition of GB-2 and JOKAN make a 4th branch thus this is not in agreement with the 3 branch theory. Moreover, there is no need of 20 points.
2. Quotations revealing point locations.
There are two types of quotations, “OO NO EI” and “MYAKKI SHOHATSU”. Examining the JUSHIKEI HAKKI we find that the descriptions change with the years, thus the point locations change.
3. REISU KEIMYAKU Chapter meridian paths.
The KEIMYAKU Chapter of the REISU is the basis for meridian paths. In the KEIMYAKU Chapter, GB-2 and JOKAN are not included after GB-1, thus the path of the JUSHIKEI HAKKI is not the same as that of the KEIMYAKU Chapter.
Conclusion:
It can be said that the locations in the ancient KOOTSUKYO are the same as those described in the KEIMYAKU Chapter of the REISU which is the basis of acupuncture-moxibustion, while the JUSHIKEI HAKKI contains the results of the accumulation of changes through the years. JOKAN is on the Stomach Meridian, GB-2 on the Gall Bladder Meridian and TH-23 on the Triple Heater Meridian.
