This report is being made to the 28th Annual meeting of the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association of Japan, and deals with the acupuncture treatment of eye problems, specifically with our own developed-technique of direct needle treatment around the Ganglia of the autonomic nerveus system, hereafter referred to as the Ggl. Ciliare.
With regards to direct needle stimulation of the Ggl Ciliare, we have tried to improve the functional disturbances and various related diseases of this condition.
Throughout the experiment, we utilized the Accommodo Poly-Recorder, model HS-9C, by Kowa, to measure the accomodating function of the eyes, including the ability of the subjects involved in the experiment to see both near and distant objects.
The experiment took place at our school clinic, and the participants included school staff and student volunteers, as well as patients who visited our clinic.
The participating subjects were divided into a control and an experimental group. The experimental group was treated with stainless steel 5 centimeter, extremely thin needles. The needles were inserted into the Ggl. Ciliare to the depth of 3.5 to 4.0 centimeters. Needles were left inserted for fifteen minutes. Before and after each treatment, measurements were made with the above mentioned Kowa Poly-Recorder. The post treatment measurement was taken immediately after the needle was taken out.
Results of the Experiment:
The experimental group experienced degrees of visual fatigue, while the control group, on the other hand, experienced a contraction time and relaxation time to a lesser degree.
The experimental group experienced an improvement in viewing near and distant objects. Their vision became clearer, and writing on a blackboard was easierto read.
Conclusion:
In comparing visual fatigue and its effect on both the control and experimental group, we observed that the experimental group experienced an improvement in seeing near and distant objects and points. We feel that the accomodating function of the eye, improves with acupuncture treatment of the Ggl. Ciliare. This belief is substantiated by the data obtained from our experiment.
We also observed that the main diseases of the eye's accomodating function, namely eye fatigue and the first stage of presbyopia, improved with this direct needle treatment. The experiment is continuing, and results will be reported in future meetings of the Association.
