We conducted a survey on anesthetic management for elective cesarean section in Japan. Questionnaires asking about anesthetic management for elective cesarean section were sent by mail to 121 university hospitals and specialized hospitals for obstetrics. Answers were obtained from 80 (66.1%) of the 121 institutions. The most frequently used anesthetic method for elective cesarean section was double-spaced combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. It seems that based on recent publications, new techniques to prevent and manage hypotension have been used, and the timing of administration of antimicrobial prophylaxis during anesthesia for elective cesarean section has changed. To provide safer anesthetic management, further information based on evidence is needed.
