Myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia is characte rized by anemia, abnormal proliferation of erythroids, myeloids and other hematopoietic precursors, varying degrees of the marrow, and myeloid metaplasia in the liver and spleen.
Reported herein is the first case (probably) which was diagnosed as myeloid metaplasia of the pleura in a cytologic preparation from the pleural fluid of a 69 year old, female patient with myelofibrosis of over 20 year duration. Terminally she developed left hydro thorax, and cytologic examination led to a diagnosis of myeloid metaplasia. The postmortem examination also confirmed the clinical impression.
