Abstract
We analyzed 45 cases of pleomorphic adenoma occurring in the parapharyngeal space. Between 2005 and 2015, 45 patients underwent operations in our department. Median age was 47. All tumors were located in the prestyloid compartment and median diameter of tumor was 50 mm. Regardless of the diameter of tumor, all tumors could be resected by the cervical approach without using the mandibular swing approach. As postoperative complications, facial palsy and first bite syndrome were observed. The majority of facial palsy was temporary paresis of the marginal mandibular branch area. In 35 cases, preoperative FNA was performed. Of these cases, 34 were diagnosed as benign tumor, of which 25 cases were diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma. Therefore, preoperative FNA seemed to be useful.
