The Design Dept. of Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has been researching the Design Approach method for a proposal approach to information system design. This paper presents a case study of the use of this methodology in the development of an information communication system and discusses the similarities and differences between the research phase and actual development. As representative examples, I report practical results applied to a large facility maintenance system and a medium-sized library system. Although the basic process of formulating a concept from a workshop and environmental analysis by the parties involved is common, it was found that the order of the process differs from case to case and that a detailed internal environmental analysis is necessary to lead to the development of a specific UI design.
